Reasons to Ride a Smart Trainer

Virtual Rides

Apps like Zwift and Rouvy integrate with your smart trainer so you can participate in virtual group rides on virtual routes. Compete with friends and pros across the globe.

Beat the Bad Weather

Although the right winter and rain cycling gear will go a long way to keeping you comfortable outside, many times riding outside is just unpleasant and can be unsafe.

Simulated Conditions

Indoor smart trainers use automated changes in resistance to simulate road conditions and inclines. Work on intervals and climbing as if you were outside, minus the traffic.

Time Efficiency, No Interruptions, Ride Anytime.

Great for Parents or anyone with limited time and/or fluctuating schedule.

Professional Training

Use training apps like TrainerRoad for highly focused workouts. It's like having your own personal coach to help you work on posture, pedal stroke, and mental endurance.

Variety and Entertaining

Access to a variety of workouts and more interactive with more active feedback keeps riders engaged and having fun!

Smart Trainer Basics

Direct Drive

These trainers attach directly to your bike drivetrain.

Pros
Get more accurate metrics than a wheel-on trainer
Feels as natural as riding outside
Quieter than traditional trainers and rollers

Cons
Requires an extra cassette and assembly (We can help!)
Moderate transition time between training and outdoor rides
Can be bulky and hard to move

Wheel-On Trainers

Resistance is applied to your back wheel via a roller.

Pros
Attach your bike without any added hardware
Easily go between riding inside and outside
Lightweight and easy to move

Cons
Can wear out the rear tire
Tire can slip while training
Requires frequent re-calibration

Let’s start with Wheel-on Trainers, we carry 3 different types:

Saris Mag +

The Saris Mag + is a magnetic trainer. Magnetic trainers are very reliable and will provide a good workout and will certainly work the cardiovascular system and the same muscles as riding outside, however, it will not feel the same as riding outdoors, nor will the sensations be as realistic as a fluid trainer (see below). Since the resistance is constant, there will be no fluctuations as you increase or decrease your effort. You will also not have the ability to coast, because when you stop pedaling, the resistance will take over and the wheel will come to an abrupt stop. The Saris Mag+ includes a handlebar-mounted shifter to change resistance during your workout without having to leave your bike.

Price: $349.99

Fluid 2 EQ

A fluid trainer will consist of a roller, flywheel, and fluid encased in an outer shell. Your wheel will sit on the roller. As you pedal, the fluid is pushed by paddles inside the outer shell and the fluid heats up. The harder you pedal, the more resistance the fluid will provide and the more resistance you will feel in your pedal stroke. This undulating resistance not only makes riding more efficient, but it also has a realistic outdoor feeling. Fluid trainers are generally considered to be superior to magnetic trainers because they allow for the most realistic riding feeling and noticeably quieter than magnetic trainers.

This Fluid 2 Smart Equipped comes with a speed sensor which allows for a virtual riding experience
